Celebrating Renewal

Description

We have two Junkanoo parades - one on Dec 26 (Boxing Day) and one on New Year's Day. This guy is vigorously shaking those cowbells to ring in the new year - just imagine the sound of 500 revellers with cowbells, trumpets, trombones, tubas and drums!!

Thank you Roger and Donna - The name Junkanoo is derived from the slave trade days when an African prince named John Canoe became a hero after outwitting the British slave traders. Slaves who wound up in the Bahamas were allowed 3 days a year rest, Dec 25, 26, and Jan 1. On Dec 26 and Jan 1 they were allowed to celebrate in their African tradition of music and dance, and honoured John Canoe. The parades are now a tourist attraction, commercialized by the Ministry of Tourism. #1024030
