Bald Eagle Trout Fishing on Deschutes River

Uploaded: August 01, 2008

Description

ISO 400, f8, 1/320 sec, Canon 400 mm DO IS lens plus 1.4X extender, handheld. On a recent raft trip on the Deschutes River in central OR, I witnessed this Bald Eagle circle over the river, and then drop down with the obvious intention of catching a fish. Normally, they fly with their legs tucked up against their bellies. As this bird got close to water level, he extended his legs and then dove for the water. He came away with a huge wild rainbow trout, which I also got an image of as he lifted off. Unfortunately the actual grab of the fish was behind a tree from my location.

Exif: F Number: 8, Exposure Bias Value: 0.33, ExposureTime: 1/320 seconds, Flash: did not fire, compulsory flash mode, ISO: 400, White balance: Manual white balance, FocalLength: 560.00 mm, Model: Canon EOS 5D

Thanks so much Linda, Tommy and Vladan! I did get an image of the bird with the fish it captured, but it isn't entered in the contest. If you want to see the (very large) trout that the bird caught, it is the second image in my regular gallery on BetterPhoto. #6259910

Right place right time GREAT CATCH!!!

Both you & the Eagle I checked your gallery for the sequence right away.

In Alaska you can bait them in with Salmon when fishing or they try and steal your catch. Check my Gallery as I just returned from a trip.

Happy Shooting
