Yes. I used a PS version of the sandwich technique. I started by copying the layer and applying a gaussian blur. I then varied the opacity of this new layer so that the sharp layer (beneath) became more visible. Finally, I created a mask on the blurred layer, and painted it in with shades of gray so that parts of the sharp layer became even more visible.
The gaussian blur was the only filter that I used.
