Condo Electricity Dynamic Photo HDR
Uploaded: June 02, 2008
This resultant High Dynamic Range image is comprised of three separate images taken using a tripod and cable release.
One of the images is underexposed, the second one is well exposed and the third is overexposed.
The purpose is to get details in the underexposed final product and details in the overexposed part of the image.
This is just a very ordinary shot of cloud formations along with the power wires behind my condo development.
I used High Dynamic Range software to load and align the three images and then I used this same software to tone map the resultant image.
Beneath this image you will see the three images that comprise this single image. In addition I will also add another result that I did not like.

Here are three images that comprise this single image plus a second version that I did not care for. #933792Jessica Jenney June 02, 2008
WOW, Melissa I love the result! Such incredible detail! I love the one you posted as well as the rejected result. But I think I prefer the rejected one with cooler tones. #6008540Jennifer L. Taranto June 02, 2008
ooh ... that's a toughy ...i think I might prefer the cooler tones too ... either may, it's amazing the range of tones you've achieved in these!! love the lines across the sky too!! #6008623Melissa Olsen June 02, 2008
Wow...Melissa that is a lot of work...did you eat the day you did all of this...LOLTiia Vissak June 02, 2008
I like the reds and greens of the leaves and roofs in your contest image, but the clouds are a bit too green, so I prefer the sky of your rejected image. #6008757Nadya Johnson June 02, 2008
Melissa, these are such fascinating results! As I mentioned to you privately, the completed images resemble the results I get with lighting blends, in many ways. The one you chose looks a lot like Color Burn (at maybe, 22%) and the other one resembles Linear Light, at maybe 35%. Not to be a trouble-maker (LOL!) but I think I will go with the cooler tones, as well. For one thing, the roofs are more defined and colorful. This is an image like so many others, one could play with HOURS (!) getting many different versions, each very different than the last.I also wonder what might happen if the dark version were a little more exposed! I can't seem to see it any larger but on my monitor, it looks completely black. Either way, this method's really interesting to me and I can't wait to try it out! #6008764

At first I thought I liked the one you chose and then changed my mind and liked the other one...then I went back and looked at the selected one and liked it better...needless to say I have been going back an forth about 10-15 times and still haven't decided!!!!! Lets just say I like them both and leave it at that!!!!! GREAT work!!!!! ♫ k #6009204Daniella Puente June 02, 2008
Very good HDR work on this Melissa. In my opinion the second version (rejected) works better for me, I think just matter of taste :) is more clear and finally the tones I believe are most adjusted to reality...VERY GOOD!Cassie L. Woodlee June 02, 2008
LOVE THOSE clouds!!!! fantastic work Melissa!!!! #6009479John Connolly June 02, 2008
Wonderful HDR work here Melissa! I think you selected the correct image, I am wondering what the effect of 5 exposures would turn out like? #6009802Eivor Kuchta June 02, 2008
Thanks for sharing this process, Melissa! Now I understand a little bit more about HDR. I think I prefer the one you rejected, with the cooler tones. Looks like a storm brewing. But both are very good. Why don't you try and enter that one next month? #6010119Judy A. Lawhon June 02, 2008
Melissa....both of the photos are excellent, but I, too, like the second one the best. Hard to chose as they are both so well done!! #6010313David Phalen June 02, 2008
Excellent HDR work Melissa!! I've played some with HDR and am scheduled to take an HDR workshop this summer. I think you made the right choice. The rejected image seems a little overdone. #6010553Dorann Weber June 02, 2008
You turned and ordinary photo into an extraordinary photo Melissa...Were each of the photo's a bit transparent before you merged them together..?? #6010698Vladan D. Djordjevic June 02, 2008
Terrific photo with great lines, color, lighting, details, pov. Fantastic effects, melissa! #6010778Nancy L. Green June 02, 2008
SUPERB DD work dear friend, the colors here are awesome and the effect is SO dramatic, beautifully done!! <>< #6010888Michael Umbreit June 02, 2008
Melissa - Nice HDR work! I too have been experimenting with true HDR and psuedo HDR (one RAW image). I have had various results that ranged from very realistic looking to that neat grunge look to something completely unusable. Recently I had some good luck taking two HDR images (like you have created) and merging them via layers. You may be able to get the best of both worlds. - Mike #6010996Evy Johansen June 02, 2008
Great HDR, Melissa! Beautiful and dramatic image!! #6011395Stefania Barbier June 03, 2008

The sky is very dramatic and it is your main subject on this image...your eye go up and down the frame, but it is a great sense of movement on this picture...VERY DRAMATIC sky!!!Cheers!Bill Knaps June 03, 2008

Wonderful work Melissa!,eileen bedford June 06, 2008
Great job Melissa, love how you took us through the stages, a real learning tool for all here. I prefer the you chose, like the browner towns you achieved. other one was a little harsh but that is the color tones I gravitate too. #6026469Nikki McDonald June 07, 2008
What a very interesting image and discussion this is, Melissa. Thank you for taking us through your steps. I am very interested in the dramatic effect you were able to achieve. I think I will go with the "rejected" camp. I think they both look overdone so I would go with the most overdone if you know what I mean. Great job on this. #6032245Raymond Pauly June 16, 2008
