Alone Among a Thousand

Uploaded: April 05, 2008

Description

Shot in Ektachrome in the Phu My orphanage in Saigon, Vietnam in 1972. The orphanage housed 1,100 people from newborns to some over 100 years old. This child was one of the few in the nursery that was still active. There were only 5 French Nuns to run this haven for the needy or infirm.

While some in my unit helped in other places at Phu My, two of us went to the nursery to touch and hold the children.

WOW!!!!!!!!!! AWARD MATERIAL and so sad. This is very moving, Tedd. The baby's expression tells the story.

EVERYTHING about this shot is exceptional. #894233

Thanks, Holly. As I think you can understand, this room is one of the things for me that marks my time in that war zone most deeply.

This is exceptionally moving, it just moves me. Thank you for sharing. Did you scan this? Nice job and the photo is in great shape. The world can be a sad place... #5749758

Yes, I scanned the slide. It took a bit to tone-down the harsh light - it was very dim in the room and really bright outside with many windows.

Sad, yes. But we can make a difference if we are willing to enter the hard places.

I don't usually take time to comment on photos, but feel compelled to "chime in" and just say how incredibly moving this photo is. Thank you so much for sharing it! #5749861

Beautiful piece of art and wonderful piece of history. My father was also in Vietnam in 1972 and this is not the type of image we are used to seeing. Thanks, #5753090

My thanks to both of you, Molly and Karen. I've never been sure of what I could do with this image. If it touches people, that is enough.

Molly, thank you for the connection with your father.
