How was this photo taken? #1143300

Alex Ermolin June 25, 2009

Since the Author is silent, let me guess: out camera on a tripod in portrait orientation, set long exposure time (bulb mode), push the button, expose for a while and then - while the shutter is still open - rotate camera to landscape orientation. Move faster at first, then slow down gradually till full stop. Then expose a little more in landscape mode.

Dear Alan - am I right? :)

Cheers,

Alicia - thanks for the question - sorry to be slow getting back to you, but I'm not very active with BetterPhoto any more.

Alex - mostly right... I have to think back... it was shot on a tripod, and rotated... it was taken from Coit Tower hill, looking west. It wasn't in bulb mode; I may have shot it on manual exposure though. If it's really important, I may be able to go back and look at the exif. Alex is right that it appears to have started in portrait and ended in landscape orientation. There was not a lot of deliberation in the movement.

I was inspired by some of the images I had seen of zooming during a photo.

Just curious how the two of you found this picture...

Thanks for the comments. #7676915

I actually don’t remember how I found this picture. I signed up for a lighting class and after that just started looking at pictures and found this one. I thought it was really cool. Thanks for the information. I’m going to try that out when I get a chance. #7678587
