Becoming Raegeena
Uploaded: December 15, 2007
EF100, f/2.8, 1/30th Second, -1/3ev, ISO100, RAW, tripod
I spent just over an hour photographing my friend's fascinating transformation into Sister Raegeena Wit Envy.
Here, a quick check in the bathroom mirror, as Raegeena's decorated face takes shape.
(The mirror has a beveled edge, which created the "double image" seen here.)
Raegeena is a Sister of Perpetual Indulgence, Las Vegas Chapter; the Sisters are quite active in the community,
raising money for a number of different charities, including AFAN.

Great colours and clarity. Well done. #5211974Chris Budny December 16, 2007
Thanks, Brandi & Gail! I almost *never* photograph people, so this was a bit of a stretch for me. I just wish I'd had a bit more light in his bathroom, because so many of my shots during his makeup, have motion blur. But I really liked that the mirror's bevel created a parallel reflection; I left my tripod set up mostly in one place, and just fired off shots, particularly when he leaned in, creating that double image. #5213535Susan M. I thought this was some effect created in PS, Chris. A terrific capture! I really love the colors and lighting. The details are just fabulous! #5214400John Caruso December 17, 2007
Chris, this one is right up there with your best pieces. You've conveyed so much in this photo on so many different levels. I have absolutely no doubt that this one will go very far. I tip my hat to you! #5218713Chris Budny December 17, 2007
Thank you both, Sue & John! I had a fun time documenting my friend go through what was a LOT of work, to get ready. That evening's fundraiser event was "Sister Bingo"--I'd time my next visit to Vegas around the chance to play bingo again; it was great fun! ;) #5218936Don Johnson December 21, 2007
A wonderful shot. And, as always, very creative. This is another winner, I'm sure. Doesn't matter what your subject is, you always produce something great! #5239863Chris Budny December 21, 2007
Thank you Don, very much for your kind words! All my shots of Eugene becoming Raegeena, were mirror-reflection shots, since I had to set up out of his way. Unfortunately, even with the fast 2.8 lens, many came out blurred. #5240376Daniella Puente December 22, 2007
This is a spectacular image Chris, very clear and with perfect light on details on the make up! I imagine that day was really nice capturing this....Recently was on Las Vegas also (Sept) and there was soooo many things to see and to capture that I havenĀ“t time for everything I wish to do!
Happy Holidays, Daniella #5243093

Thank you very much, Daniella! It was a fun afternoon, capturing these images, then going to play bingo later that evening, hosted by the Sisters, and see Sister Raegeena in all her center-stage glory! I wish my photos from the bingo game had been successful! #5243517Donna La Mattino Pagakis January 15, 2008
Great eye for details Chris, nicely photographed! #5346418Chris Budny January 16, 2008
Thanks, Donna... Fingers crossed! #5347958Susan M. Smith January 17, 2008
Wonderful capture Chris! The detail is fantastic, along with so many other elements, as was said before. Thanks for sharing the story too. Best of Luck - tho I don't think you'll need it ;) #5352866Chris Budny January 17, 2008
I'll take the lucky wishes! Thanks, Susan! #5352885Nikki McDonald January 20, 2008
Excellent job here, Chris, on a very interesting shot and in less than perfect photographic circumstances. Love the crisp, clear detail and the bold colors. Easy to see why it's a favorite--wonderful photo and great memories make a combination that's hard to beat. Good luck and thanks as always for hosting the Countdown thread so gracefully. #5367250Chris Budny January 21, 2008
Thanks, Nikki...! A little more light would have been great, just to get a slightly faster shutter... but, it was a fascinating transformation to watch--I felt like I was backstage at a Vegas show, watching one of the performers get made up. #5371893Sign up for an interactive online photography course to get critiques on your photos.
