This is so beautiful, Chris. Thank you for sharing it with all of us. I can't even imagine what it must be like to stand in this corridor, bathed in this bejeweled light. Should be a winner. #5153884

Christopher Budny 12/1/2007 6:07:51 AM

Thank you everyone! Though I feel some thanks should go to the architects & glass artists, too! :) In this aisle, in the fall & winter, it is nearly impossible to come away without a beautiful photograph. I think this one is the "better" of my 3 annual attempts, in a technical kind of way--the image quality, in terms of noise, color, detail, etc. is better than the Wilson's Tomb image captured on my old Sony. And the Wilson's Tomb image was much better than my first attempt (Light Lives Here) in 2005, which was far too washed out. However, I'm still undecided on whether I like the vertical comp of Wilson's Tomb, more than this horizontal comp... Something to ponder for next year's attempt! :) #5155295

Susan M. Hembree 12/1/2007 9:51:28 PM

I agree with what you said, Chris. I think this is the best, especially in overall image quality, of the three you've taken of this. I can really appreciate the challenges of photographing this after my own first attempt. Again, thank you for the opportunity. #5158060

Christopher Budny 12/2/2007 1:03:42 PM

Christopher Budny 12/6/2007 9:13:47 AM

Thank you, Melissa--you're absolutely right! The light that enters the building is spectacular, pretty much year-round, if the sun is out. It falls in different places all year, with this one aisle being the true stand-out, but only in fall/winter mornings. I'm happy to share ;) #5175472

For those who have commented on the "year-by-year" evolution of this shot, a version made several years later became perhaps my own favorite from all the years I revisited this location: #11524739

EFS17-85 @47mm, f/16, 1.6 Seconds, +.3ev, ISO100, RAW, tripod.
My annual tradition; shooting in the south arcade aisle of Washington National Cathedral, to capture the early morning light in late fall/early winter. The sun, stays lower in the sky and creates a marvelous light show in this aisle, as light coming through the south wall windows paints the limestone in gorgeous reflected color. The first year, I shot 10 weeks into owning my first P&S camera ("Light Lives Here"). The next year, I put that Sony camera on a tiny tripod and, misunderstanding, used an ND filter ("Wilson's Tomb").
This third annual tribute to the light is from my Canon XTi, with tripod, no filters, in a horizontal format for the first time.
