This intimidating looking creature is actually quite harmless. Hickory horned devils evolve through several life stages (“instars”)…eventually mutating into Royal Walnut Moths.Bob

Thanks Dominick, Donald and Heather for your nice comments.This amazing looking critter really fascinated me at the scene and I was compelled to research its biology.
This huge caterpillar will eventually grow to twice the size pictured here, turn green, drop to the ground, then crawl around seeking a likely spot to burrow into the earth to pupate.
It will emerge next spring as a Royal Walnut Moth...and seek a mate with which to start the cycle all over again.
