Take Time To Stop And Smell The Flowers

Uploaded: August 13, 2007

Description

F4.5, 1/200, ISO 100, 150mm. We saw this little guy sitting in a flower pot at Universal Studios eating the flowers. I couldn't believe my luck at getting a chance to take a few photos. And I didn't know squirrels ate flowers!

Someone mentioned a flaw in the other photo, so as much as I hated to, I pulled it to fix and reenter. Here are the comments on the other one.

David, Jennifer and Evy, thank you all so much for your encouragement!

Jennifer, I know some people think these guys are a nuisance, but I have always thought they were so cute (although I put a bucket on my bird feeder pole to keep them from eating all the bird seed lol)I have 2 more photos of him/her in the flower pot that I will post later (maybe next month's contest) but in those, the flower was already in his/her mouth. Also, I have photos of him eating a cookie we gave him. :)

Oh how cute you caught him at just the right moment. I think they are fun to watch also. Amazing all the tricks they can do to try and get bird food. :)

Dominick, Audrey, Colleen, Rakesh, Barbara, and Tammy thank you all so much for your kind comments! And Tammy, they can do some serious acrobatics to get to the bird feed, can't they? :)

Oh man, what a capture, Carol. I really thought you had expertly photoshopped the flower into his little paws and mouth until I read your description. Beautiful job with this perfect opportunity. Colleen has said it all.

Carol, what excellent work. The odds of catching that squirrel at the right time is simply amazing. Your pov, color, composition, clarity all top notch. And it makes for such a wonderful picture, the kind that should be displayed to remind us all to take some time. As always, you continue to impress us with your talent and keen eye. Way to go girl

Colleen, Nikki, Sam, Brenda, Peaches, Frank, Dianna, Susan, Kate, Kay and Mike, thank you all for looking and for your encouraging comments!

And Nikki, my PS skills are not quite up to that level (unfortunately)! :D

Peaches, what is the DNP award?

Mike, he was in a fairly large flower pot, so I only had to kneel, unlike the mushroom photo :) The only problem was I knelt wrong (with bad knee up and good knee on pavement) so I had problems getting back up! Also, by this time, several people saw him because I was snapping away, and I think they were too thrilled by the sight to notice me. And I have 3 hanging out at my birdfeeder everyday, want me to send one up your way? You have a lot of flowers for munching! :D

Carol, great capture. So many people are so busy going and going that they don't stop to smell the flowers OR the see the creatures that are eating them.

Jenny, Mary, Sherry, Peaches and David, thank you so much for your encouraging words! I really appreciate it!

And Sherry and David, you gave me a good laugh with your comments! :D

Whatever kind of flowers these are, a man that works with my husband says he has the same type flowers at his house and the squirrels eat them, but leave all his other flowers alone. #4644032

Jennifer, thank you so much! :) I plan to enlarge this to poster size and hang in my son's room. He and I are huge animal lovers; I used to work as a vet assistant and I wouldn't be surprised (and would be pleased) if he chose to be a veterinarian. We stop all the time to save tortoises crossing busy streets! #4646623

Carol, what a great catch. You should reward this guy with a bag of peanuts! My squirrels eat everything, or at least will try to, and if they aren't eating it, they're rolling in it or simply tossing it around for fun. :) #4652365

OMG - I LOVE this Carol! I just saw this on the monthly thread waiting for finalists - your clarity is exceptional - love his little paws! I do hope this becomes a finalist! #4818070
