You might want to hold a few of these back for September instead of competing so fiercely against yourself :) #4635736

Gina Cormier 1/4/2009 8:26:52 AM

I love this image!! I am new and now trying my hand at macro. Not having alot of luck I wondered if you had any tips since you are the big winner!!! Thanks!!! #6980642

Christopher Budny 1/7/2009 6:10:57 PM

Thanks so much Gina! As for shooting macros, my 2 bits of primary advice are, 1) get a dedicated macro lens if possible (I *love* the Canon 100mm, which I used on this image---it is my all-time favorite lens, worth every penny, and I shoot a lot of non-macro with it as well) and 2) always use a solid tripod (and a remote shutter release if possible, or the timer) to minimize camera shake from your finger on the trigger.
Macro is great territory to explore, and I love experimenting with shallow depth of field.
Happy shooting! #6997949

Leslie Carson Wolfe 4/16/2009 9:22:14 PM

Exquisite! Congratulations! Do you think the Canon EF-S 75-300mm would be able to capture details as sharp as the 100? This is incredible. #7412756

Christopher Budny 4/17/2009 8:46:21 AM

Many thanks, Leslie. The 100mm macro is a remarkable Canon lens, my all-time favorite so far. I've not used the lens you ask about, so I'm afraid I can't offer an opinion about it. I have one EF-S lens, and I've generally been pretty happy with it. I also have a 70-300, and that is actually my least-favorite lens, though I've never tried it for this kind of shooting. Whatever lens you use, for this kind of closeup/detail, I'd definitely recommend a tripod, and your camera timer or remote-control shutter release. #7414255

Leslie McLain 11/28/2009 8:43:13 AM

Congrats on your beautiful winner Chris. #8175053

Bunny Snow 4/18/2010 9:03:48 PM

Wow, a real gold first place win and will deserved. This is wire sharp, beautiful clarity, exquisite color and tonality, wonderful composition and it has dew droplets to boot. This is one of my all time favorites, and well deserved. It is inspiring! #8546038

Christopher Budny 4/19/2010 4:08:51 AM

Well thank you very much, Bunny! This one enjoys "pride of place" in my home; a large print of it is the only one of my photos which hangs in my living room. It is probably my all-tiime favorite image shot with my 100mm lens, too... that lens is always tack sharp! #8547295

Kara L. Hendricks 5/2/2010 7:17:43 PM

I have always loved this one Chris... And to think... I own this camera now!!...:)))

This is with the 100mm? I still have a bit of trouble reading all the stats up there..:) #8584871

Christopher Budny 5/2/2010 11:26:53 PM

Weird, right?! I'm so glad you have the camera now, and I hope it brings you continued gold!
Yes, this was a shot with the 100mm:
EF100 (the lens)
f/2.8 (the aperture I used---the lowest f-stop the lens can do, which reduces depth of field and blurs the background more. The closer to your subject, the more the background blurs.)
1/3200th Second (the shutter speed---I probably shot this in Av mode, which is pretty much the shooting mode I live in!)
-2/3ev (the exposure compensation value, since it was a bright day, I dialed it down almost a full stop)
ISO100 (I shoot 100 whenever possible, and typically always when out in daylight, for the least noise possible... I never liked the noise on the Rebel above ISO400)
RAW (well, of course!!!)
tripod (at 1/3200th, I probably could have done hand-held just fine---but I'm addicted to tripod shooting, and stability is always good.) #8585096

Julianne Bradford 6/18/2010 8:36:27 PM

My thanks go out to an unknown photographer roaming Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens;
only after I shot several images of this misted lotus, feeling so lucky to find dew remaining in the heat,
did I notice a woman across the lily ponds with a large spray bottle of water hooked on her belt.
