Awesome detail #4583956

Laurie Daily 7/31/2007 3:07:39 PM

Thanks everyone for your most appreciated comments. I take hundreds of these images with the extention tubes and throw away most of them. It is not easy! Many insects do not like you in their face, but this guy did not mind.

David, I am pretty sure this isn't a hummingbird moth as I think I saw one and this wasn't it! Still would love to know what it is! #4584051

Jim Zuckerman 8/27/2007 7:11:17 PM

Hi Laurie,

To identify this species, you would most likely need to show the entire wing pattern. Entomologists who specialize in butterflies -- lepidopterologists -- might be able to partially identify this for you (like giving you the Genus name but not the species) based on just seeing this picture. You could contact the entomology department of a major natural history museum, like the one in L.A., and email the right person this picture and they might be able to help you.

This is, indeed, an awesome shot.

Mike Rossignol 9/10/2007 7:43:38 AM

I can't say exactly what kind it is, but if it's anything like my profile picture then it's one of these: Zerene, Coronis, Mormon or some typt of fritillary. Beautiful picture btw!! Butterflies and moths are some of my favorite subjects #4772080

Nancy L. Barrett 12/3/2007 11:45:42 AM

This is a great shot, Laurie...just browsing through your gallery. Judging by the previous image in your gallery, this is a Fritillary species, as Mike mentioned. Don't know which one, though!!

1/200s at f/4.5 ISO 100 90mm lens with extention tubes. As I just started researching moth and butterfly species for a name, I discovered there are thousands. Does anybody know the name of this one?
