The Artic Hare (Lepus articus) has long white hair in the winter and grayish in the summer. Their ears are fairly short to concerve heat and are finely edged in black. They have big eyes and whiskers and huge back feet that allow them to hop like a kangaroo on the snow. Males are called bucks, females does and the baby is a leveret. Young are born with open eyes and very furry. They live about a year in the wild and the population around Churchill is rebounding (ho ho a little pun). They are between 22 to 28 inches and weigh about 9-12 pounds and eat mostly willows, grasses, flowers and saxifrage. Their only natural enemy other than man is the wolf. The young may be preyed on by artic foxes, gyrfalcons and snowy owls. They have a short white tail.
