I went throught the process of adjusting:

brightness
contrast
colour balance
saturation
cropped to 8x12 inches at 300dpi
unsharp masked 300% at 0.3 pixels
unsharp masked 12% at 52 pixel

A big improvement resulted.

Thanks for all the tips and advice Peter, I've learnt a great deal over the past 8 weeks. I'm looking forward to applying this new knowledge now!
