So glad I viewed this in the larger image, Sherry, it was a nice surprise to see the beautiful result of your filter work here! A good still life made into a really superb art-image! Kudos! #552660

Beautiful still life and effects, Sherry! #3555874

Thank you, Ron and Jesica. This image already had a textured background. First thing I did was 'paint' the picture with the smudge tool. I believe it was one of the watercolor brushes. Then I applied a small amount of watercolor (Filter>artistic>watercolor). After that, I applied some poster edges (filter>artistic>poster edges). I then duplicated the layer and added paint daubs to the new layer (filter>artistic>paint daubs) and made it a bit blurry. I chaged the layer mode to overlay. I flattened the image and used the eraser tool with jacked edges to make the border. #3557167

Sherry,
You make it sound so simple. I can imagine how many undos and trash layers it must have taken to get to this final fantastic image. Folks who use Painter need to take a lesson from you. You've shown that you can do pretty much anything with Photoshop.

Thanks Ron. Yes, I had MANY undos and duplicate layers going and trying different things on them. But this time I tried to jot down the steps. So many times I do something and then can't duplicate the look because I didn't write it down. I have never used the smudge tool to 'paint'. I bought 'Photoshop creative' (issue 14, on sell now). They talked about using the smudge tool to paint, so I tried it.I didn't realize this tool could be so creative. This magagzine has lots of how-to's and even came with a CD with more brushes, fonts, patterns and textures. It's like Christmas. I'm a font addict! #3558682

This could be in a gallery and I would be fooled into thinking it is a painting. Excellent work on this, Sherry. Haven't tried using the smudge tool to paint as yet, but just wait till winter sets in. #3565348

Thanks Karen. Gotta love these magazines who show you new techniques to try. I would never have thought to paint with the smudge tool. It is very fun and easy. It's my new tool of choice to paint with. #3568231

Fantastic results, Sherry. Am so glad to hear that you took it step-by-step and didn't have it planned in advance!
Can't wait to try your steps on some of my photos.

Christopher, Sharon, Lori, and Donna, thank you for your nice compliments. I'm just glad I wrote down the steps I did. My advice is to try and do this when playing around like I did. Otherwise I forget. #3595081

What an awesome image, Sherry. (I had to stop and comment on it as I browsed your BP gallery.) I enjoyed reading through the comments here and am interested in the steps you used to get this effect. I'll be trying the smudge tool, too! :-) #3617712

Sherry Karr Adkins level-deluxe November 22, 2006

Thank you, Judith. Yea, the smudge tool is fun. When I first saw the smudge tool, I thought 'why would anyone want to smudge or smear something?' But after seeing the article in the magazine, I tried it and really like it. Let me know how you like it after you try it. #3617885

Hi everyone. I need to make a correction in my directions on this image. I stated originally that I used one of the watercolor brushes with the smudge tool. That is incorrect. Actually it was 'small pastel on charcoal paper'with the smudge tool. Sorry for the mistake....... #3652017

Sam Britt November 30, 2006

Great composition & effects on this beautiful still life. I don't use the smudge tool very often, maybe I should do some experimenting!
