Taken with 4x5 camera. Scanned into PhotoShop. Many filters later, here is the result.

So glad I viewed this in the larger image, Sherry, it was a nice surprise to see the beautiful result of your filter work here! A good still life made into a really superb art-image! Kudos! #552660Sherry Karr Adkins November 06, 2006
Thank you, Brian. I appreciate your nice comments. #3555022Ron Jones November 07, 2006
Beautiful composition! Sherry, what combinations of filters did you use? #3555609Jessica Jenney November 07, 2006
Beautiful still life and effects, Sherry! #3555874Sherry Karr Adkins November 07, 2006
Thank you, Ron and Jesica. This image already had a textured background. First thing I did was 'paint' the picture with the smudge tool. I believe it was one of the watercolor brushes. Then I applied a small amount of watercolor (Filter>artistic>watercolor). After that, I applied some poster edges (filter>artistic>poster edges). I then duplicated the layer and added paint daubs to the new layer (filter>artistic>paint daubs) and made it a bit blurry. I chaged the layer mode to overlay. I flattened the image and used the eraser tool with jacked edges to make the border. #3557167Ron Jones November 07, 2006

Thanks Ron. Yes, I had MANY undos and duplicate layers going and trying different things on them. But this time I tried to jot down the steps. So many times I do something and then can't duplicate the look because I didn't write it down. I have never used the smudge tool to 'paint'. I bought 'Photoshop creative' (issue 14, on sell now). They talked about using the smudge tool to paint, so I tried it.I didn't realize this tool could be so creative. This magagzine has lots of how-to's and even came with a CD with more brushes, fonts, patterns and textures. It's like Christmas. I'm a font addict! #3558682Karen Slagle November 09, 2006
This could be in a gallery and I would be fooled into thinking it is a painting. Excellent work on this, Sherry. Haven't tried using the smudge tool to paint as yet, but just wait till winter sets in. #3565348Sherry Karr Adkins November 09, 2006
Thanks Karen. Gotta love these magazines who show you new techniques to try. I would never have thought to paint with the smudge tool. It is very fun and easy. It's my new tool of choice to paint with. #3568231Chris Budny November 16, 2006
Wow, what a terrific transformation! Excellent work! #3593111Sharon L. Weeks November 16, 2006

Christopher, Sharon, Lori, and Donna, thank you for your nice compliments. I'm just glad I wrote down the steps I did. My advice is to try and do this when playing around like I did. Otherwise I forget. #3595081Mary N C. Taitt November 20, 2006

Thank you so much, Mary. #3608584Judith MacArthur November 22, 2006
What an awesome image, Sherry. (I had to stop and comment on it as I browsed your BP gallery.) I enjoyed reading through the comments here and am interested in the steps you used to get this effect. I'll be trying the smudge tool, too! :-) #3617712Sherry Karr Adkins November 22, 2006
Thank you, Judith. Yea, the smudge tool is fun. When I first saw the smudge tool, I thought 'why would anyone want to smudge or smear something?' But after seeing the article in the magazine, I tried it and really like it. Let me know how you like it after you try it. #3617885Sherry Karr Adkins November 30, 2006
Hi everyone. I need to make a correction in my directions on this image. I stated originally that I used one of the watercolor brushes with the smudge tool. That is incorrect. Actually it was 'small pastel on charcoal paper'with the smudge tool. Sorry for the mistake....... #3652017Sam Britt November 30, 2006
Great composition & effects on this beautiful still life. I don't use the smudge tool very often, maybe I should do some experimenting!Sherry Karr Adkins November 30, 2006
Thank you, Samantha. I had never used the smudge tool before I tried it on this image. I like it alot. #3652206Sign up for an interactive online photography course to get critiques on your photos.
