Ablative Absolute

Nancy Donnell 11/15/2007 9:55:27 AM

Hi John,

This is really beautiful, but I was curious what it was? #787366

The answer to your question is that this is a photograph of a plastic ice cube made with a microscope. It is part of a series of images I have made with special microscopy equipment over the last decade. Microscopy is a lot of fun and inexpensive to get started. You might want to check out an article here at BetterPhoto: www.betterphoto.com/article.asp?id=185. Since these are not really photographs of things, but more of light refracted by substances, I chose to title most of the images after parts of speech in Latin. I had more education than I may have needed. An ablative absolute is a sort of all-purpose clause in Latin.
Thanks for your interest!

As one who suffered through Latin, and as an English teacher, I find your grammar studies both fun and interesting. You've inspired me, John. I am going to create a gerund image. :)

Hi Laura,
This is one of my current favorites. I really enjoy the voyages of discovery involved in the creation of these images. Thanks, John Siskin

You nailed it when you said "voyages of discovery"!!! Have you ever seen my "cake plate" photos? They're in my gallery... several of them, this reminds me of those. (but no microscope) The reflective coloring and light makes this a remarkable photo! I love it! #5929886

Hi Christine,
The cake plate images are very interesting. I like the ways you can manipulate light with glass. Great work! Thanks, John
