Description

Exp 1/30 F/7 195mm
These birds have built a bower in shrubs in our yard. They collect blue bits and pieces for decoration, and spread them out around the bower. I saw them with a few yellow pieces too. Quite a few ladies visit, and re-arrange the pieces to their liking, and also check on the interior of the bower to make sure it meets with their approval. Got a great series of shots of their courting rituals.

Thanks Paul. I'm in N.E. Victoria. This is the first time they've built, and it's only about 50 metres from our house. Fascinating watching them. I have a stool set up, and sneak over and wait patiently, with camera on tripod. Sometimes they come and sometimes they don't. I'm really thrilled to have this opportunity, despite them eating my garden, vegies and flowers! #3235783

This is so fascinating Bea! Surely that is not the female in the background? I wonder if they are as loving and faithful as our wood pigeons. We have a couple which regularly use our garden fence for their courting rituals.

Hi Kate, yes that's the female. Generally there are 2 or 3 hopping about the bower. When he's not there they go and tidy up the inside of the bower a little, then move the blue outside treasures about as well. I've put blue things outside, and they finish up in their bower. They've quite a collection of blue buttons! There are several dozen of them about the place, mainly during the Winter months, and they're real garden pests. #3255757
