Boy at chalk mines

Description

Nikon N80, Sigma 28-105mm Lenses, auto exposure, Kodak 400. Taken at an abandoned chalk (kaolin) mine. Trying to capture the feeling of my son in this vast desert looking area..he was looking for fossils. Didn't completely get the "feeling" I wanted.

Nice picture. However, let me do a couple of comments. The picture will have more impact if your son is not at the center of it. Since he is looking to the left side, it will be better if the center of the frame is located to his left. I agree with you that you did not get the "feeling" you want. Probably you include to much of the white sky and there is an empty space betwee the bottom of the frame and your son. However, if you look carefully you can improve the picture by just doing a cropping. I did some work on your image and I am including the result.

Pat, what disturbes most at these pics is the lens flare (typical for zooms when shooting vs. the sun). Avoid it but using another angle towards the sun, or use a lens hood. #407

Thanks for the comments. Really just getting started in photography. Having to get used to the "rule of thirds" theory. Also, I keep forgetting that I can crop photos :)
Would it have helped to use a polarizer in this situation? #408

A polarizer may have been able to darken the sky a little. Due to the angle to the sun, it may not have been too effective. #411
