In 1493, Pope Alexander VI issued a decree that divided New World lands between Spain and Portugal by establishing a north-south line of demarcation. This statue is located about 9000 feet in elevation in one of the lands in the Spanish side of the line. Name the city and the country.

Hi Jim,Thanks for providing the hint on the location. Let's see if anyone can come up with the correct answer. I'll check back in a week or so, and see how things are going. In the meantime, please don't give away the location :-) ... let's keep it a "secret" until everyone gets a chance to make their guesses.
And, for everyone else, have fun guessing where this wonderful scene can be found!

whats to stop people like me from just agreeing people who have said they have been there and seen it? I guess the first correct answer is the winner... #2251730Emile Abbott January 04, 2006
I ALSO HAVE TAKEN THIS SHOT IN QUITO, ECUADOR. IT IS BEAUTIFUL OVERLOOKING THE CITY FROM THE MOUNTAIN TOP. #2252609Judith MacArthur January 04, 2006
Yep, it has to be Quito, and I bet most of those non-natives of us who have been here stopped to or from The Galapagos! :-)(How can you keep it a secret for a week when you print out the responses! Just wondering!) #2253439

This is the statue of the Virgin of Quito, on the Panecillo, the hill in the middle of colonial Quito. The Panecillo is over 9,000' ASL and the statue is over 130' tall... quite impressive. This has to be one of your images with a Photoshop-added sky/background (based on the shadows on the statue versus the lighting in the clouds).
So, what do we get if we win?
