Gary H. Minish level-classic August 02, 2003

Thank you everyone for all your great comments! I've been enjoying the opportunity to shoot some bright colors and am making the best of it because it won't be too long and it will be back to shades of white :-) #156124

Karen Kirspel August 02, 2003

I love this picture!!! It is beautiful. What settings did you use? I have a F717, but I am a beginner and rarely take it off auto pilot. #156129

Gary H. Minish level-classic August 02, 2003

Thank you, Karen :-) I took this in manual mode. I set the aperature at f8.0 first (as small as it will go) to get the depth of field I needed, then I spot metered on the brightest portion of the sunlit clouds and set the shutter speed to give me one full stop brighter than what the camera liked, which turned out to be 1/640. My 707 can usually be pushed at least one stop without burning out the white and that gives me the brightest possible foreground in a high contrast situation. Hope that helps. #156135

Susana Matos August 03, 2003

This is surely a winner, and really magic with this brightness that we find in northern lands. (my best photo, bright and colorful, was taken in a winter day after some snow and ice, what is rare here in my region - called "greeen")
This is my second comment to your magnificent photo, because it´s deserved and also to ask you something;
which iso do you use? 50 or higher? I try to learn how to play my best with the spot metering, compensation of exposition, iso sensibility (which I try to use as low as possible) once my camera has no manual settings.
Cheers from Portugal, Su #156173

Gary H. Minish level-classic August 03, 2003

Su, I am very happy that you enjoy this photo! Sharing the beauty of my homeland with those who truly appreciate it is what I enjoy most about my new hobby :-) The lowest ISO setting my camera has is 100. I leave it at that setting almost all of the time. The only time I use a higher setting is when I can't use a tripod and a slower shutter speed. Trying to shoot action photos of the dogs while walking them in the late evening light is one of those times when I'll use an ISO setting of 200 or more. The photos are noticeably more grainy and noisy when using the higher settings, so I try to avoid it. Thank you again for your comment and your inquiry :-) #156183

Karen Kirspel August 03, 2003

Thanks for the tips. I have been experimenting with the settings a bit. I really need to get in the habit of using a tripod. It seems to make such a difference, I'll have to get used to lugging it around. #156358

Andrea Garza August 04, 2003
