F7.1, 1/160, ISO 400, 135mm, 11/12/05 @ 3:58pm. (Shot through a wire fence) Santa Barbara Zoo. Northern Bald Eagle. ("balde" for "white-headed") The Eagles at this zoo are in a Rehabilitation habit because of injuries that prevents them from surviving in the wild. After looking at all my pics, it looks like this one has lost it's right eye.

Beautiful Kristi! #355698Terry L. Ellis December 07, 2005
The ole eagle eye, for sure! I didn't even notice that he had lost his right eye! Beautiful image in b/w with a kind of dreamy quality to it! #2162263Goshka G. December 07, 2005
I like that dreaminess too, Kristi! Was that an added effect? #2162330Kristi A. Howson December 07, 2005
Thanks so much Lorri, Terry &n Goshka for your wonderful comments. I really do appreciate it so much.Goshka, I'm not sure what caused the "dreamy" effect. The original image was dark with bad contrast. I normally try so many things and end up reversing half of them if they don't work. I used layers in various blending modes (screen, overlay, etc). I did use a small amount of Gaussain Blur (overlay mode) and Buzz to smooth the background. I think what caused the effect though was when I added a grey fill layer at a low opacity to reduce the contrast in the background. With all of these effects, I painted back in the details of the bird using a mask. Also, some of that effect is either DOF or shooting though the fence. I am (hopefully) attaching the original Raw conversion for comparison. #2162561
