Piccolo Veronese

Description

Murano glass masters are still dazzling visitors with their skills. Here, an impossibly tiny Veronese vase with white cane stripes, by Cesare Toffolo, sitting on a US quarter for scale. The vase's name comes from the Italian painter who included a clear glass vase of this specific shape, holding a single stem in his "The Annunciation" painting of 1580. Many glassmakers suggest that 16th century glass manufacturing couldn't produce such a difficult form at that time; no examples of this shape are known to exist from that era. Leading to the unanswered question -- did Veronese paint it from life, or create it in his imagination? 1921 saw the first production of this vase form, in Murano at Venini; it remains a signature piece in their catalog today, typically formed about 12 inches tall.
