Laundry Room

at the Hancock Shaker Village, Massachusetts. On our tour here we learned that Shaker men and women were never allowed to share bedrooms. There was equal rights though and the women's quarters were exactly the same as the men's but on the opposite side of the corridor. Not surprising therefore that the village died out!! Well, I love their chairs, but sure am glad I didn't live in those days...Was this custom even if they were married? :-)Great shot BTW :-) #2114439Mary Clarke November 23, 2005
What a wonderful glimpse of the past Kate. #2114500Darryl Wilkinson November 23, 2005
This is an AWESOME capture, Kate! Outstanding exposure, and the old historic feeling is preserved through your camera operations! Great work my friend!!! #2115114Kate Jackson November 24, 2005
Thanks guys. Jill I should really look it up but you know I don't think they married. Just didn't believe in men and women getting together. The kids all came in from outside like orphans and unwanted children from large poor families. Once the women got older they were allowed to be in the same room as the men in the evenings but they sat in rows of chairs men on one side and women on the other just talking. #2115733Susie Peek-Swint November 24, 2005
Great capture with the light and detail Kate ~ not too unlike what we see in NT properties here.. I can't even imagine spending that much time over the washing.. great story ~ thanks for sharing! #2115739Joy Rector November 24, 2005
love this image and the story #2115906Joe Terni November 24, 2005
That sounds a bit like our old clubs and pubs downunder.Equal rights but different rooms, but always opposite each other, but sometimes things got confused.(of course it wasnt live in, though many tried to!).I know zilch about shaker`s,was it some religious group? Lots of that old and great US wood items within that room. And that`s some sort of olden day wringer board type thing standing up in a trough? They must have had kind hearts though taking orphans and other forgotten kids in.Thanks Kate for a great shot of another era,and we all learn a bit more every day. Well taken. #2116585Terry L. Fabulous image, Kate! Such incredible light and wonderful details! Beautifully done! #2116671Kate Jackson November 24, 2005
Thanks Susie, Joy, Joe and Terry. Joe, yes the Shakers were a religious group. But they were not like the Amish at all. They embraced modern technology and had an incredible system in their boiler room which we saw working. They are well known for their simple well made furniture. In England Shaker Style furniture is quite sought after. #2116725Jenny Bosmans November 24, 2005

LOL!!! This is very funny, besides being a great image! We went to a shaker village in Maine with the same rules and results! Nice shot, Kate. Been busy with the holidays! (And too much food!) #2119373Sandra Freyler November 27, 2005
