Stainless Steel Car

Description

A rare 1936 stainless steel Deluxe Ford Sedan – one of only six made – was donated to the Heinz Pittsburgh History Center in Pittsburgh by Allegheny Ludlum, an Allegheny Teledyne company.

The original six cars were made and designed by Allegheny Ludlum and the Ford Motor Company to demonstrate the uses and durability of stainless steel. Of the six that rolled off the Detroit assembly line in 1936, only three exist today. The cars’ stainless steel body long outlasted its non-stainless steel parts. Each of the original cars logged at least 200,000 miles in the hands of Allegheny Ludlum officials before "retiring" to private ownership in 1946. Thousands of additional miles have been logged on the odometers since, and the shiny bodies have outlasted most of their non-stainless steel parts.
