On the Forest Floor

A carpet of Wood Poppies dress up the debris-strewn forest floor at Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve on May 5, 2014.
---
The Preserve has been horribly ravished by the spate of damaging storms that have hit our area over the past few years. There are hundreds of downed and uprooted trees that have been waiting in line to be removed from the premises. This week there is a constant loud buzz of chain saws, and the pathways are covered with piles of small branches and twigs. A GOOD sign.
-----
A persistent problem with deer may have a noticeable effect on blooms. Hurricane Sandy badly damaged the ten-foot deer fence that surrounds the park. Since it has been breached, deer are roaming freely, trampling flowers and having their fill of the tasty flora. As of now, the gates have been left open. One wonders how the problem will EVER be resolved.

Beautiful! Your story reminds me of this area with the downed trees. We often have wildfires and windblown downed tree so it is difficult to hike in many areas. Summer college students with saws and chainsaws are hired to clear the paths. #11041565Jeffrey R. Bange May 08, 2014
Beautiful capture and composition Michelle, only time will tell what Mother Nature has in store for you and the preserve. #11041633Marijana Fajgl May 09, 2014
