Modern Gothic

Uploaded: March 12, 2014

Description

On a clear-sky afternoon, pre-sunset, there's a moment when the sun aligns with the center line of the building; the ribs of the central portal's archivolt cast uniform, perfectly centered shadows onto the smooth stone voussoirs behind.
Often, the voussoirs of gothic cathedrals are elaborately carved within the recessed arches of the archivolt. Here however, the 3 bands of space between the ribs are unadorned, giving a strikingly modern, streamlined feel to a traditionally ornate feature of 14th century gothic style.
Future generations may decide to add traditional carvings in this space; until then, the smooth voussoirs and crisp ribs create a splendid backdrop for Frederick Hart's massive, swirling sculpture, "Ex Nihilo". A depiction of the creation of mankind, four male and four female forms are shown at their moment of creation; not yet fully formed, not yet aware.
