Crested Caracara

Uploaded: January 26, 2014

Description

This is an uncommon bird but found regularly on the King Ranch. One of the King Ranches major enterprises is Eco-tourism and wildlife management. They are in the path of two major fly zones and have an extensive range of wildlife. The Crested Caracara is a large headed, long legged bird that is blackish brown overall with white throat and neck. It has red to orange facial skin and a barred white chest. It has a slight crest on the back of the head. This bird was a long ways off and I shot this at 1,200mm handheld from our vehicle which accounts for its lack of tack sharp detail but you can see the main features.

Exif: F Number: 8, Exposure Bias Value: 0.00, ExposureTime: 1/1600 seconds, Flash: did not fire, compulsory flash mode, ISO: 1600, White balance: Auto white balance, FocalLength: 215.00 mm, Model: Canon PowerShot SX50 HS

A tough shot but you did bring home the beauty of this bird. Has a hawk like look to it. Gorgeous colors and again the story is a fun read, interesting and the combination of story and picture is beautiful Emile. #10956613

Thanks John, Tiia, Frank and Bobby. I really put this little camera to the test at very far distances handheld. It will never match the sharpness of a high dollar lens on a tripod but I was very surprised with the overall ability over a wide range at a reasonable cost. On this trip it was the only camera I used as an experiment in its (and mine) ability under these circumstances. This was one of the least sharp but I still got the main features of this uncommon bird I would not have gotten with a 200 mm lens with a 2X doubler. Have a nice week-end. #10956718
