122 mph Vista House

Uploaded: January 25, 2014

Description

The 1918 Vista House is located along the Historic Columbia River Highway at the western entrance to the Columbia River Gorge. It sits atop Crown Point, 733 feet above the Columbia River. Due to the layout of the land and weather the gorge can become a wind-tunnel and on 1/24/2014, 122mph winds were recorded at the Vista House. Highest ever!

Upon completion of the Columbia River Highway (1916), motor travelers identified the need for a “comfort station.” Design engineer, Samuel Lancaster, envisioned Crown Point as the ideal site for “an observatory from which the view both up and down the Columbia could be viewed in silent communion with the infinite.” Vista House also serves as a tribute to Oregon’s pioneers. Some locals at the time called it "The $100,000 Out-house". #1560917

I have grown to dislike wind a LOT. I'd not be a happy person in that place once the view had worn off. #10955844

Great shots of Crown Point & the Gorge, Denny! I heard that they clocked a 69 mph gust there 2 days ago while we were having 45 mph gusts in PDX. Beautiful light, color & textures! #10956274
