The Story.
When the original towns of Forster and Tuncurry were being built, access across the lakes entrance was a DIY affair. The first recorded public ferry took the form of a row boat, which commenced service around 1890, and was operated by one John Kennewell. There were many different ferry owners, and by 1908 a Charles Wilson won the contract to operate the ferry. He had to supply an oil launch with an engine capacity to carry 20 passengers.
By 1937 the ferry had to be capable of moving 6 cars as well as passengers. In June 1949 a Mr C, Blows and his three sons operated the punt and ferry till July 1959, when the new bridge was completed and opened!
