Very nice image. Great that you were able to bring out the texture. #1527416

Debbra Bailey May 08, 2013

I agree with Arthur on the texture - really nice! I love the monotone color and the crop - he has room to look into :) #10686517

Glad to see you sharing some more images from the great trip Mike. This is a doozy. #10686551

Jeff E Jensen May 08, 2013

Yup, I love all of the texture. What did you use to bring out the detail? #10686612

lisa anderson May 09, 2013

I like the texture a lot, also. I found it really hard to get shots I liked when I was there-this looks good :) #10687041

Thank you Art, Deb, and Dale. Since I don't seem to have much time until all the family issues are solved I went back to some older shots.

Jeff this is a standard edit in ACR then an application of NIK HDR preset Dramatic.

Thank you Lisa. From your shots, it looks like we took the same trip. I agree though I was disappointed in the photography opportunities in general. We also had smog so bad that one day in Cairo you could not see the pyramids from just block away. We had that problem in varying degrees the whole trip, but it was still worth seeing in person. I think you did get some outstanding shots though and I also got a few I like a lot - just not as many as I wanted. Abu Simbel was clear and a nice day but very hoards of tourists - us included - made getting shots tough. #10687185

Thanks, Mike. Your processing worked well. #10687753

this is a really cool shot, I love all the texture you brought out, and I also like the monotone color. the only thing it appears to be leaning back I am sure that because of where you were standing and the lens. #10688245

Yes, Abu Simbel and the pyramids were disappointing for photography. I got my favourite shots from the desserts we visited...did you make it to the White and Black Dessert? #10690405

Dale Hardin May 11, 2013

I love desserts too. Chocolate is my favorite. :o) #10690500

You are a bad man Mr Dale! I was about to say "pecan pie" then decided I would not tease our Lisa. So many pitfalls with spellcheck!
But let us now be a little serious, folks. I have only ever had a one day trip from Alexandria down to the pyramids at Giza so this is all new to me Mike. Have you any images taken from further back that give us some idea of the scale of the temple. There are hundreds of images available online of course but I would like to see how you handled it with the heathen hordes you mentioned!
Just for those who don't explore online with Google it might be of interest to know that when the High Aswan dam was built the temple would have disappeared beneath the waters of the lake formed. However, an international effort in the 50's moved the temple and the carvings some 600 ft back and a couple of hundred feet higher up. And that is why Mike is able to show us his image. Thanks Mike. #10690706

Peter, you are too kind-it wasn't spellcheck, I can just never remember how to spell desert-really, only one s? #10691711

Sorry about the delays I have been having on getting current. Sherry's mom came home, but taking lots of time to get her house in order to support her.

Your welcome Jeff and thanks.

Rita thank you. There is not much that is straight in this shot. The walls slope at different angles, but I leveled this shot with the block behind the head which I believe is vertical. This may be an optical illusion or I could have missed.

Lisa no we did not go there - 10 days in Egypt from Aswan to Cairo and 5 days in Jordan where the main desert was Wadi Rum.

Thank you Peter and yes you are correct in about the successful effort to move the monument above the waters of Lake Nasser. By the way the interior is very impressive too, but no photography allowed. Here is a snap I waited for a long time to get as few tourists a possible in the shot. Not very good but will give you the overall view. #10693691

Sorry for the late post. I am amazed by how different the first shot looks from the second. I would not have guessed they were from the same place. I like how you were able to isolate an interesting carving and how you can see all the fine detail. Nothing gets lost in this one. Very nice job. #10694042

Beth Spencer May 15, 2013

I really thought I had commented on this one. I really like it and it is amazing how big the entire monument is. Thanks for sharing that. I hope things are settling down at home. #10694849

Michael Kelly level-classic May 15, 2013

Thank you Elaine. I had to find things to shoot over the heads of the masses of people so looked for some higher up shots. I am glad you think this one worked - I liked the result myself.

Thanks Beth - If I recall these 4 main statues are 40 feet tall. The doorway you see leads to chambers and passages that go a long way back and at the very back 3 small statues are illuminated by the rising sun twice a year.

Thanks for your concern over the home front - not settling down yet but we have hopes that things will get back to normal soon.
