Monthly challenge #1518725

I love the texture you've applied, what is it? #10606058

Dale Hardin March 12, 2013

I know exactly where and when this was taken, and it brings back some fond memories.

The texture has some nice relief to it, that simulate brush strokes, and seems to emulate a moire effect on the wings. Very interesting. #10606424

Stephen Shoff March 12, 2013

The texture is CS6's "Oil painting" filter.

Interesting logic context, Dale. Moire patterns rather than brush strokes following contours.

To my uneducated eye, it does seem to me that the filter did very well at emulating the brush stroke relief in the butterflies and plant, i.e., where there is detail. However, I'm not so convinced that algorithm worked as well in the background. Maybe in close examination that fails but at typical viewing distance wouldn't be as noticeable.

I'd be interested in hearing from those of you with stronger art backgrounds and experienced with other vendor's filters, (NIK, Topaz, etc) if there are recommendations for Photoshop plugins that do more more convincing simulations of various art mediums and styles.

If you printed this, what would you print it on? #10606434

Brandi K. Mills March 12, 2013

This is very pretty! I also really like the texturing you did! And a very creative idea for the challenge. #10606661

Canon makes a paper called "Photo Rag". It's got a lot of texture to it. I think this would be a perfect candidate for it. #10606781

Stephen what is there not to love about this one. Its beautiful, I really love the texture. this is going in my favorites for sure! Totally Awesome...can you tell I really like this one #10607019

Stephen Shoff March 12, 2013

Thank you, Brandi, Rita. Yes, Rita I can tell that you really like it. I could, though name one or maybe two, depending on the monitor you are viewing this with, things not to love about this. But I'm with you, this goes into my favorites folder too.

Thank you, Jeff. Since my printer is Epson, I'll probably look for a bright white "photo rag" equivalent from Epson or maybe Red River or Ilford. Don't know if I could get an ICC profile for an Epson printer from Canon. My printer, R1900, isn't tuned for non-glossy papers but it should still do pretty well. #10607054

I love the texture in this photo Stephen...sometimes I find textures grab my attention more than the subject matter but this works beautifully! #10607901

Thank you, Kristin #10608557

Beth Spencer March 13, 2013

Stephen, I absolutely love the colors and the butterflies in this one! I like the texture and bet this would look great on a canvas print. I am still looking at snow and more snow and black and white world. I haven't seen much color, much less blue skies, so this is all the more special! I hope it will be spring one day and my butterflies will be back!! #10608566

Jeff E Jensen March 13, 2013

Beth, at first, I had the same thought about a canvas print, but I think the texture of the canvas would compete with the texture of the image. That's why I think that the photo rag, which has good texture, but is far more subtle than canvas. #10608577

Stephen Shoff March 13, 2013

Glad you liked this one, Beth. Thanks for your paper recommendation. I was thinking canvas, too, so your follow-up comment, Jeff, is good additional input.

Beth -- I think you missed my previous entry, "Sunlamp", that I put up just for you stuck-in-the-snowbirds. You can check it out in my gallery (http://www.betterphoto.com/Premium/Gallery.phpx?id=302140&cat=157850&photoID=13747513&iPage=2&mp=V1) #10608580

Very cool effect. I'd like to see this in print. Would it be too weird to post a picture of it printed out? #10609138

Stephen Shoff March 14, 2013

That's an intriguing concept, Elaine. If it could be pulled off, it certainly would be educational. It goes far beyond anything this club has done within my relatively short tenure.

I think you mean taking a picture of the print in such a way as to demonstrate the impact the paper texture has on the print. I might give that try, but it will be a couple of weeks -- I'll have to pick a paper based on Jeff's suggestion and some canvas "paper" (I think my printer handles that) and then post some comparative shots.

I'm planning on printing it for my local club print competition so at least part of this will be done anyway.

If you see this image come back in a couple of weeks, you'll know I successfully gave it a try. Otherwise.... #10609437

Elaine Hessler March 14, 2013

Yes, that is exactly what I mean. I'm looking forward to seeing it! #10609544

Beth Spencer March 14, 2013

Stephen, I must have missed it, but I went and looked, what a Beautiful picture! I can't wait to see some even one spring flower, winter needs to be done!! #10609859

Stephen Shoff March 14, 2013

Thank you Beth.

Winter needs to start here in California. We have about 3 more weeks of opportunity. If it doesn't arrive, we are going to have a long, hot, dry summer. #10609881
