Description

Also known as Una’s Peaks, these twin towers of basalt guard the northern entrance to the Lemaire Channel, an eleven kilometer long iceberg filled passage in the Antarctic Peninsula which is only 1600 meters wide at its narrowest point. Each peak is topped by a cap of ice, and the taller peak has only been summited once. Steep cliffs hem in this passage which is one of the top tourist destinations in Antarctica.

The ship’s captain planned it perfectly, cruising into the strait just before sunrise. As we approached the Peaks, the brilliant morning sun aligned itself to cast a diffuse glow. A memorable passage.
