Description

On the tiled plaza in front of the towering Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavik, stands a large bronze of Leif Eriksson. Placed on a tall stone
base, surrounded by a low, prow-shaped wall, the installation suggests Leif at the head of his ship, journeying to North America. He is considered
the first European to land in North America, some 500 years before Columbus. The statue was a gift of the United States,
by Alexander (Stirling) Calder, to commemorate the 1,000th anniversary of Iceland's first parliament (call the Althing.)

Wonderful perspective and composition. Interestingly, the sculptor was the son of Alexander Milne Calder who sculpted the statue of William Penn that stands atop the tower of City Hall in Philadelphia, and this Leif Eriksson statue sculptor was the creator of the Swann Memorial Fountain at Logan Square in Philadelphia. #10564780

Thank you both!
Michelle, I gather Mr. Calder has many Pennsylvania (and New England area) sculptures... he seems pretty prolific. I also learned this statue of Leif appeared on a US postage stamp in the late 1960's. #10566545
