The Low Down

Uploaded: December 15, 2012

Description

A section of beach south of Port Orford last night during the December “king tide”. These king tides occur when the sun and moon’s gravitational pulls reinforce each other (spring tides), when at the same time the moon is closest to the earth. This happens here in November, December, and January. Note the exceptionally wide beach that occurred after the sea level dropped by 11.3 feet in 7 hours! During the high tide, the waves hit and deposit huge pieces of driftwood at the base of the sea cliffs, which can be seen in this photo.

Quote of the Day : “The sea is emotion incarnate. It loves, hates, and weeps. It defies all attempts to capture it with words and rejects all shackles. No matter what you say about it, there is always that which you can't.” – Christopher Paolini
