Sail & Saucer

Uploaded: December 14, 2012

Description

The high ceiling over a stairwell of two long flights; I'm standing at the base of the first flight which ends at a landing (not shown) at bottom left.
The second flight ascends on the other side of the wall that supports the two Ionic columns. What I found so interesting about this stairwell was the
dome treatment. Six vaults are formed in the ceiling, and a "sail" dome starts to fill each one... But then, a smaller saucer dome (the inset, darker,
circular dome) cuts into the middle of each sail dome's center, creating a domed dome in each vault. The former Pension Building, from 1887.
