Excellent picture. The only criticism I have is that the white blob in the left hand top corner is a little distracting. #55

I just wanted to say that I just love this photo. How do you colorize black and white? Is it a special film?

Thanks Debbie! No, it's not a special film, just black and white. I do my own printing on matte paper (you can ask for that if you use a lab) then you use photo oils or pencils to color with. Marshall's oils is what I use. It's not hard and its a lot of fun. Good luck and thanks again. #101

Hi Jill, What a beautiful photo. I have been looking at your handcolored photos, they are all beautiful. I am struggling to become a photographer specializing in B & W. I love the handcolored touch. Could you share your educational background? You said you print your own B&W film, what type of enlarger do you use? Did you take handcoloring classes? Thanks for sharing your work.

Hey Jill, one more question. What color was the little girls dress originally? I seem to think that in order to handcolor, all subjects need to be in white when the picture is taken. How do people color jeans? Thanks,

Hi Donna,
(I first tried to email this to you, but it came back?)
Thanks for the comments on my picture of Claire. I just happened to be online right now, so I can try to answer your questions.
First of all I took some classes on photography at the end of my college "career" just to finish up. I was almost done with an Interior Design degree and after taking the photography classes dropped it for photography! After those classes I was hooked!
Then I put a darkroom together in my basement with all the information I learned in school. A friend of mine had old Beseler enlarger from when he used to use it in his advertising company. It's gigantic! But it works great. Before that one I used a way smaller one that worked fine for the beginning.
I didn't take hand coloring classes, that I just picked that up with all the art background that I have. It really is not hard. I use Marshall's oils, they are transparent oils so the original photograph shows through. As far as your question on everything needing to be white. It doesn't have to be white, with black and white everything is in shades of gray. When you use the oils the shade shows through. Does that make sense? Claire's dress was originally about that color. I used the color called "sepia" for her dress. Jeans are kind of tuff because you should really mix a few colors together to get a realistic jeans color.
Here is a great website that can help you a lot with hand-coloring. Look up the "studio" pages. www.handcolor.com
Hope this helps you.......you can write me if you have any
more questions.
Thanks again.
