LINCOLN on Basom Hill

Uploaded: November 21, 2012

Description

F/10, 1/320s, ISO-400, Canon EF-S 10-22mm lens @20mm
This statue of Abraham Lincoln sits at the top of Bascom Hill at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The statue was placed there more than 100 years ago to honor Lincoln who signed the Morrill Land Grant Act, without which many of our great state universities, like UW Madison, would not exist today.
Every great university has its graduation traditions. At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, graduates trek up Bascom Hill to wait their turn to climb into Abe’s lap in cap and gown and pose for a picture. The tradition holds that with one arm slung around his neck, the grad is to whisper into Abe’s bronze ear and tell him their own hopes and aspirations for the future and thank him for his vision for higher learning.
As shown in the image, Abe’s left foot sticks out just a bit further than his right and has a worn patina. It is another tradition on campus to touch Abe’s left foot before an exam for good luck.
