Ever since Captain James Cook brought sheep to New Zealand in the late 1770s, its identity has been in many ways defined by sheep. However the number of sheep have been declining from >70 million in the 1980s to around 31 million in 2011 due to the economics of cattle ranching. The majority of New Zealand's sheep are based on the South Island, where this image was taken. Here there are more than 20 sheep for every human!
