One more for Dale's challenge. #1477922

Ok Jeffrey, once more you have sent me Googling to find out what the heck Rozel Posts are! Several pages into Google I had decided that this is not Rozel,Pawnee County,Kansas(population 156); nor is it Rozel on the island of Jersey, Channel Islands; nor indeed is it Le Rozel, Normandy, France; but finally the mystery was solved and it would appear to be Rozel Point,Box Elder County, on the Great Salt Lake, Utah and what I am looking at is the remains of the linear jetty. Now I stress 'linear' because my research tells me that there is something of far greater interest in that area and that would be the incredible 'Spiral jetty' a huge circular counter clockwise spiral of basalt rock created in 1970 by the late artist Robert Smithson. The water level of the lake rose and this piece of art lay submerged for three decades or more. So my question now, Jeff, is 'was it visible when you were there and if so do you have any images to show us?' And if any one is in the least curious as to what I refer then Just Google, 'Spiral jetty' and click on 'Images'. Prepare to see something that yesterday you probably didn't know existed and be grateful that this Brit has a spirit of adventure (virtual). #10254167

You are too funny, Peter! You are right, this is right around the corner from the Spiral Jetty. The water level has been pretty high this year, so there hasn't been much of it visible. These posts are the remains of an old oil exploration operation, and I find them incredibly fascinating. Perhaps part of it is that they are the only thing man-made for miles (besides the spiral jetty). This is a favorite place for light painting as there is nothing to burn. Next time you are out this way, I'll take you out there. #10254269

By the way, on a calm day, you can hike up the hill a bit and get a nice view of the Spiral Jetty, even with not much of it above water. With the stormy conditions (it was raining at the time I took this image) there wouldn't have been much to see. Also, the color of the water can change drastically over the course of the year. It was pretty red this day. Here's a shot from December where even less of the Jetty is visible. #10254304

I had to dig through the archives for this one. This was taken in April of 2009. If you look closely, you can see my wife and kids walking the spiral. #10254336

Yes Jeff, that 2009 image shows the spiral off well and I waved to the family! #10254588

I really like the tilt on this one....would love to see an Topaz style HDR workup on it that would make the colors pop a bit. :~) The spiral jetty looks really cool...how deep is the water around it when it is visible like that? #10254600

Jeff E Jensen July 31, 2012

Aimee - The lake only averages about 14 feet deep and is only about 33 feet deep at the deepest point. So, when the water level lowers, the shoreline recedes pretty quickly. When the water is gone, you are left with a pretty nasty mud flat that is a mix of mud and salt. And, in this area, there are several places where oil oozes from the ground and adds to the mix. If you look closely at the image from 2009, you can see that the water line doesn't quite reach the back side of the jetty. You can also see that there is water in the jetty that hasn't completely evaporated.

The small island that you can see on the horizon near the right side of the frame is Gunnison Island, it's about 12 miles away.

Here's a couple of links to some maps that show the depth of the lake:

The Spiral Jetty is in this map, about half way down on the right side, directly to the right of the "Gunnison Bay" label in the middle of the map.

Fascinating image Jeff, with lots of very cool textures from the lovely clouds, the wood in the posts and to the great tones in the water. Like the tilt Also.

And thanks to Peter for the research. #10255769

I like it and the information added in the comments - thanks Peter and thanks for digging up shots to share Jeff. I really like the look of the water around the base of the posts as well as the overall comp and pov. #10258562

Congrats on your EP, Jeff. These shots are all really nice. That spiral jetty is beautiful. I tried visiting your blog before I went to nepal and the photos wouldn't load-china is sometimes a little ridiculous with what it chooses to make difficult. #10258653

I love this shot with it's POV and angle.

And now, thanks to Pete, I've added a new location to the places I want to see someday. That Spiral Jetty looks really cool. #10259173

Guess it takes a native to make the Great Salt Lake look nice. But you've managed it! #10259232

Jeff E Jensen August 01, 2012

Thanks, everyone!

Stephen - you'd be surprised at how much beauty there is to find around this smelly old lake! #10259278
