Our Saviour on-the-Spilled-Blood ~ Russia

Uploaded: July 10, 2012

Description

The Cathedral of Resurrection was erected on the embankment of the Catherine (now Griboyedov) Canal. On March 1, 1881, the terrorist Ignaty Grinevitsky exploded a hand-made bomb and mortally wounded the 63 year old Emperor Alexander II, who entered the annals of history as the liberator of Russian peasants from serfdom. The emperor died on the same day in the Winter Palace. To commemorate his 26-year reign and to redeem the sin of regicide, the unique Cathedral commonly known as "Our Saviour on-the-Spilled-Blood” was built on the site of the assasination from funds raised by people's donations.

What can I say that others haven't, Rey?
Mainly, that it's wonderful to see the full version of that amazing Cathedral.(I'm working from your first new post backwards, as you can see.)
It's always fun seeing ant-people scurrying around ~ really brings home the size of the structure.

Wow! I've never seen anything like this before! Not to be disrespectful, but it reminds me of a big Gingerbread House! The colourful shapes and designs make this Cathedral look good enough to eat! A beautiful capture of this intricately designed building, Reynaldo! ... and wonderful background history! :) #10225877
