Hover Fly Hovering
Uploaded: June 11, 2012
I found a number of these hover flies in a little patch of woods in Michigan's Upper Peninsula alternating between flying motionless in one spot to zipping away only to return to flying motionless again. Their movements were always in a linear pattern, so I located myself appropriately and photographed them when they momentarily hovered in front of me. Tamron 180mm Macro, Kenko 1.5x converter,180mm x 1.5 = 270mm, f/8, 1/200 sec, ISO 100, Canon 580 EXII on macro flash bracket, camera on BushHawk shoulder mount. Manual Focus. Processed in Lightroom 4.

I won't even say how many times I tried to photograpg these insects and failed. hats off to you Paul, nice detail and color #1468562Paul R. Nelson June 12, 2012 0
Thank you, Art. I don't know it it was a courting ritual or why they were doing this, but the fact that they were consistent helped me to be in the right place to capture this. The flash also helped, as it resulted in an effective shutter speed much faster than the actual shutter speed. My Tamron lens is very well suited for manual focus, but it was a challenge to get them focused before they zipped off again. But it was also a lot of fun trying. #10176627Liz blahh June 12, 2012 0
