Description

The Main Reading Room at the Library of Congress opens to the touring public two days a year. The massive, 8-sided, marble-clad space is a marvel,
crowned by a giant dome and cupola, rising 160 feet above the floor.

What a beautiful view....why only twice a year? A treasure such as this should be more accessible I think! :-)

Thanks, folks!
Ken, I think you posted about the same time as Jack, and it got orphaned.
The room itself is open to library users conducting research or otherwise using the holdings, nearly all year. Anyone over 16 can register for a library card and use the Main Reading Room and the library's vast holdings... but photography in the room is not permitted, except on these two semi-annual open house days. #9993758

Wonder why they keep us out..Not fair. It's too beautiful to keep to themselves. #9993822

Thank you, RJ, Usman & Carolyn!

Carolyn--I should clarify: the Main Reading Room itself is viewable to the public every day the building is open, from a glass-enclosed balcony inside the room, about halfway up the height of the space. But it is a working research library all year, and the room is still used for that sole purpose. Given the hordes of bus tour groups that come through the rest of the (equally beautiful) building all day, there's no way they could effectively use the room and let visitors mill around it at the same time. #9993920
