Hanging On

1/640s @ f/10, ISO 1250, 500mm. (Animals)
Check out the physiology of the Carolina Wren's tongue. A bird's tongue has 5 bones in it that support and strengthen it, together they are called the 'Hyoid apparatus'. Birds tongues are generally harder and less flexible than ours. Most birds have a relatively simple tongue, a flat triangular blade in shape with a few backwardly pointing papillae at the back of the mouth to ensure food only goes in one direction.(www.earthllife.net)

Bones? Who knew? Apart from that, this is a spectacular wren portrait. They are beautiful little birds, and their song is like a choir! #9850432Monnie Ryan December 06, 2011
