A PENNY FARTHING

Uploaded: August 31, 2011

Description

This is a "penny farthing" which was common during the 1800"s. Today's bicycles have gears or chains, but not these big boys! The pedals were attached directly to the tricycle and when they were pushed through one full turn the wheel would also rotate one full turn. The the bigger the wheel, the farther the penny farthing could go with just one turn of the pedals. The penny farthing used this extremely large wheel and traveled faster than the other gearless bicycles of the day.
