~A newly-emerged adult dragonfly~
On the stem above the dragonfly, you can see a frontal view of the exoskeleton (exuvia) left behind after the emergence as an adult. I didn't realize but discovered that adult dragonflies live only about 2 months but their life cycle can take up to 4 years to complete. From egg to nymph stage - most of those 4 years are spent living entirely underwater. Amazingly, if the nymph cycle is completed during winter months, emergence as an adult does not occur until conditions are favorable in the spring. When air temps are warm enough, the nymph crawls out of the water for the very first time and onto a water plant stem, where it sheds it's skin for the final transformation into an adult dragonfly....and for 2 months only, the hunt is on for a mate(s) and the dragonfly cycle begins once more...(Found at Zilker Botanical Gardens in Austin, TX)

I am fascinated with these. Couple of years ago there was a special on their life cycle. Produced in Japan. You sure nailed this one Val. So what you are saying is that when we see them they have other things on their mind LOLBy the way Good morning neighbor. Maybe we will see 100 but not the 108 and above. Corn is gone, beans are gone pastures are brown. #9579285

Beautiful image and great info! So the question could be translated (if one were to even find a question within the given information, lol) as whether it is better to live a submerged life for a longer period, or, to be one that flies freely for a brief moment in the sun, and the rain, and the wind, oh well, both ways seem like a lot of work, lol.... very nice work, Val! #9580172Kathy Salerni August 03, 2011
Holy Cow, Val, this is such a cool image and your info so interesting! I had to turn my laptop around as I did not know what that other BUG was!! Duh, I never figured that it was exoskeleton!Heather Loewenhardt August 03, 2011
