Description

If you look closely you can see my granddaughter
Re-enacting the Hide Throwing at Dana Point
While my grandson looks on
Of course in the olden days during William Henry Dana's time (author of Two Years Before the Mast)
Hide throwers stood on the cliff above and threw the hides out to waiting clipper ships.
But I wouldn't let them..so they settled for the beach instead :-)

Glorious capture and history lesson. I stood there once...during a job-hunting trip...but that's another story. You've made it look even more beautiful than I remember it! #9409555

Thanks so much! The crew from the ship the Pilgrim would throw dried hides off the cliffs here to their mates below. Then their mates would take them in boats out to the waiting ship (as described in the book "Two years before the mast" written by Dana. The kids at schools in this area read the book as part of their 4th or 5th grade studies. #9409673

Well, I saw the statue located at Dana Point and got a history lesson from another obliging sightseer years ago, otherwise I'd definitely be one of the others asking about the "art" of hide throwing, too! :) A beautiful capture of this historic point- wonderful churning surf, great light and the topper of a wonderful cloud-filled sky! WTG, as always, SoCal! #9410454

Love your low angle, Julianne. Very exciting. Excellent dof bringing out the distant shore and that sky is such a big lift to this gorgeous exposure. The re-enactment is a great way to add some story line to this beauty. #9413866
