The Bridge to Wonderland

Uploaded: March 30, 2011

Description

In 1911, The Little River Railroad built a line from Walland, Tennessee to what is now known as the Elkmont section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Although it was built as a logging line, hunters and fishermen joined in on the ride. Soon the area became very popular and exclusive. A hotel was built (the Wonderland Hotel) and the Appalachian Club was formed. Many families built cottages near the hotel as their summer retreats. Once the National Park was formed, all the cottages were given a lease. The last lease ran out in 1992 and now the cottages are in ruins. This is the bridge that leads to the hotel.
