Description

Seriously, the Statue of Liberty is a lighthouse. Consider these facts. The Statue is a lighted aid to navigation. The statue was designed with glass inserts in the sides of the torch to help ships safely navigate into the harbor, and in 1886 President Cleveland appointed the US Light-House Board to be its caretaker.

She is always magnificent! Oddly, I just learned in the past week that Bartholdi originally designed her to resemble an Arab peasant woman, and she was to be placed on the Suez Canal to light the gateway to Asia. It's true! But the Egyptians did not have the funds to pay for the work, so the sculptor had to settle for New York Harbor. Who knew? #9260740
