Gothic Attic

Uploaded: January 05, 2011

Description

What else would a gothic attic look like, other than framed out with gothic pointed arches? (Actually, this attic, or overcroft, from the Washington
National Cathedral, is the only portion of the extensive overcroft to feature this cast-concrete truss system. The remaining 3 portions of the
overcroft use an older technology (multi-piece steel trusses) and newer technology (single-post steel supports.)
This space could be floored (the horizontal 'beams' seen at left would carry a floor) but this attic was not designed with windows, so you
get the sense the architects weren't thinking about that, unlike the next-generation attic, which has substantial natural light and a floor.
