Description

This waterfall is south of Port Orford, Oregon. The diagonal layers of rock are evidence of fault activity, which is common in the region. These many faults, fracture zones, and ridges are part of the Cascadia Subduction Zone , which runs from above Northern Washington down to Northern California, ending near the north end of the San Andreas Fault. Great Subduction Zone earthquakes, such as could occur along the Cascadia, have been the largest earthquakes know to exist and can exceed a magnitude 9.0. The last major earthquake in the Pacific Northwest was the Great Quake of 1700 . Some say another is due any time. And so we keep our emergency kits organized, close at hand, up-to-date, and ready to grab and head to higher ground. Hopefully before any tsunami hits. A worst case scenario would be a 100 foot high tsunami slamming into the coast within 15 minutes. Fortunately, the odds are in our favor that “the big one” won’t be happening in our lifetimes. Still... it IS possible.
